Spider Mites in Your Landscape: What You Need to Know
By Don Churchill, Board Certified Master Arborist
Spider mites are one of the most common and destructive pests found in Michigan landscapes and they’re smaller than the head of a pin. While tiny, these pests can cause major damage to trees, shrubs, and ornamental plants if left untreated.
At Garpiel Group, we see spider mite damage more often than you might think. The good news? Spider mites are controllable with the right approach.
What Are Spider Mites?
Spider mites are not insects they’re part of the arachnid family (relatives of spiders and ticks). You’ll usually find them on the underside of leaves, where they feed by piercing plant tissue and sucking out fluids. Over time, this leads to:
-
Yellow or bronze speckling on leaves
-
Fine, silky webbing between stems and leaves
-
Early leaf drop and overall decline in plant health
Why Proper Treatment Matters
Timing and product choice are critical when managing spider mites. One of the biggest mistakes I see is the use of broad-spectrum insecticides. These products don’t just kill spider mites they also wipe out the beneficial insects that feed on them. When that happens, the mite population often rebounds worse than before.
That’s why we recommend targeted miticides, which are designed specifically to control spider mites without harming natural predators. When properly timed, these treatments can keep populations in check and prevent long-term damage to your landscape.
Signs You May Have a Spider Mite Problem
If you notice any of the following signs, it’s time to act:
-
Leaves look dusty, speckled, or discolored
-
There is fine webbing in and around foliage
-
Plants appear stressed even with regular watering
